Prepping Your Livestock Waterers for Winter on the Farm

Winter is coming!

Farms in remote and cold climates have many challenges to deal with, one of the most frustrating can be dealing with frozen water troughs and pipes in the dead of winter!

It’s COLD, your hands are freezing, and you have to get that water running! And - you probably have just a "few" other things to do.

Being prepared BEFORE the cold hits can save valuable time, stress and money later on.

Also, having an effective solution (The Ice Hero) on hand as well -  just in case your pipes do freeze - makes solving the problem quick and painless!

Because while prevention is key, freeze-ups still happen.

How do you prevent water lines from freezing?

  • Check for proper installation. The easiest way to prevent malfunctions is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing and operating the waterers. Cutting corners might save some time on installation, but you’ll regret it when you have issues at 40 below!
  • Make sure your waters are used regularly. Keeping the water running through the pipes prevents water sitting still long enough to freeze. Having livestock drinking is the best way to keep that water flowing and prevent freeze-ups.
  • Use insulation and heat tape/heat tubing in the lines. While not foolproof, insulating the  pipe and/or applying heat tape can help keep water flowing when temperatures drop. Make sure you test it out before it gets too cold so you know it’s working!
  • Prep your system for easy thawing. Having your system ready for easy thawing (just in case) with the Ice Hero saves time when you need it!  When you do need to thaw a line, you’ll be glad you took a few minutes to prep your system now while it's warm.
      • A t-fitting is easy to add, and lets you access the pipe in an emergency by removing only one nut.  You can then quickly thaw the pipe with the Ice Hero.

You'll appreciate this simple modification when it's 40 below!
